A Mathematics Project Competition for Secondary Schools began in Session 1967-68. The format evolved over the years and latterly entries were split into four categories: S1; S2; S3 and S4; S5 and S6.
In Session 1970-71 a pilot competition for pupils in P6 and P7 took place and, in the light of its success, a Mathematics Project Competition for Primary Schools was inaugurated in the following session. Latterly entries were accepted from pupils in P4 upwards.
When the competitions were launched, projects in Mathematics were still a bit of a novelty. However, as the years went by, projects began to play a much greater part in teaching, learning and assessment. Not surprisingly, interest in the competitions dropped steadily. The primary competition was discontinued after Session 1994-95 and the secondary competition one year later.
